Volkswagen Tiago is petrol-only, with a 1.0-litre turbo three-cylinder option or a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder. You can have manual or auto gearboxes, but the front-wheel-drive is standard, and VW has already ruled out a GTI or R performance variant.
There’s nothing too surprising about the Tiago. It’s not a surprise that Volkswagen has built it – customers can’t stop buying coupe-lifted SUVs right now – and the driving experience will be familiar to anyone coming from a T-Cross or a Polo. However, it’s not similar to something like the Ford Puma. It’ll be no surprise if it sells well, though. It looks good and is well-priced, with drivetrains that wouldn’t put anyone off but won’t independently draw anyone in. There’s also good space inside for four adults despite the chopped roof. A worthy little coupe-crossover, if that’s what floats your boat.
The consensus was that the Tiago would become the new entry-level VW SUV on our shores. However, Volkswagen knows that the ‘coupe’ body style means it can charge extra for a little bit more ‘style’. Now that it’s available to order in the UK, it’ll set you back roughly £1,000 more than the equivalent T-Cross and around £2,000 less than the larger T-Roc.
The Volkswagen Tiago is a small coupe-style SUV that shares a platform with the Volkswagen Polo and is halfway between it and a T-Cross. It has perfect trunk capacity and a good interior, which does not lose headroom despite the fall of the roof by the inclined C-pillar. It is available with two petrol engines and three different powers, without micro-hybrid or diesel versions and always front-wheel drive. In addition to being a comfortable car in its driving feel, the interior is well presented and offers enough legroom in its seats.
The Tiago measures 4.27 meters in length, 1.51 meters in height and 1.76 meters in width. The figures are more or less in the segment’s average except for the size that, due to the coupe cut of the body, is a little below. This SUV is 15cm longer than the T-Cross and 3cm shorter than a T-Roc. The wheelbase is 2.55 meters, and up to 4 adults of average height can travel with some comfort.
The Tiago is a 5-door SUV with a capacity for five passengers. If we want a model of the German brand with greater Power, we would have to go to the segment of large SUVs and opt for a Volkswagen Tiguan All Space opt for seven seats.
The trunk capacity of the Tiago is good, well above the average of its rivals, with 438 litres of capacity and 1,222 litter with the second row of seats folded down. These 438 litres are 16 litres more than a Renault Capture and 88 litres more than an Opel Mokwa. The Kona has 374 litres while, for example, the Ford Puma has one of the best trunks in the category with 456 litres.
The Head of Exterior Design for the Volkswagen brand is responsible for the model’s design. Together with his twin brother José Carlos Davone, Head of Volkswagen Design Centre. He has already implemented several projects for the brand. Marco and José Carlos Davone were already determined to work in the Volkswagen design team when they were students. At the time, they submitted their application with their first design sketches for future cars. Today, around 35 years later, the brothers consistently communicate about the brand’s latest design developments.
Powerful proportions characterise the design of the European Tiago. Inspired by SUV coupés from higher vehicle classes, it makes the Tiago unique in its segment. Particularly striking is the coupé-like silhouette, with its strongly forward-sloping C-pillar. The side view is also characterised by exact and sharp lines, which, together with the large wheels and offset wheel arch cladding, emphasise the crossover character of the Tiago. The overhang at the rear has been deliberately extended to underscore the vehicle’s functionality.
The new crossover is very close to the higher-segment Volkswagen models in terms of driver assistance. The new Tiago has the IQ. DRIVE Travel Assist on board as an option: the new predictive ACC and Lane Assist merge with other elements to form a new assistance system, enabling semi-automated driving up to a system-dependent maximum speed of 210 km/h. In this case, the new and standard multifunction steering wheel is fitted with capacitive surfaces.
These register that the driver is touching the steering wheel with their hands when IQ. DRIVE Travel Assist is active – as defined for Level 2 of automated driving in the EU. Each Tiago is standard-equipped with assistance systems such as the Front Assist environment monitoring system, including the City Emergency Braking function and Lane Assist. Few models in this vehicle class offer a comparably innovative range of assistance systems for such a high level of comfort and safety.
Tiago, Life, Style and R-Line. Volkswagen has redesigned its equipment lines across all model series, streamlining them for greater clarity. Features favoured by most buyers, such as LED headlights and Digital Cockpit now integrates as standard in the Tiago and the new Polo. Any potential conflicts of choice between individual components are now virtually eliminated based on the new Volkswagen equipment matrix.
This makes the range much clearer and less random from the customer’s point of view. For the new crossover model, the configurator starts with the basic Tiago version. Followed by Life and then Style and R-Line according to a Y structure. All four equipment lines impress their fair prices and can enhance and customise with attractive equipment packages or individual extras.
Eight colours and Roof Pack. The new Tiago launches in eight colours – two single finishes, five metallic finishes and one pearl effect finish. All body colours except Deep Black combined with a contrasting black roof as a Roof Pack option. The wheel size depends on the selected equipment line and ranges from 16 to 18 inches. The numerous options include a large panoramic sliding/tilting sunroof, Digital Cockpit Pro with a 10.25″ display.
ArtVelour seat covers, voice control, Black Style design package for the R-Line and the ‘beats’ sound system with 300 watts and six speakers. The amplifier houseS the spare wheel to save space. Volkswagen’s existing range of small cars is familiar with the interior, with all three trim levels getting a touchscreen. Impressively, even the entry-level Life model receives a version of VW’s digital instrument cluster. LED headlights, parking sensors, smartphone connectivity and adaptive cruise control. The style adds bigger alloy wheels. Sat-nav, upgraded headlights and two-zone climate control while the top-spec R-Line adds sporty styling that’s likely to prove popular in the UK.
Tiago buyers draw in by its more rakish styling, but they won’t miss out on practicality either. There’s enough headroom in the rear and a 440-litre boot on a par with the T-Roc. Compared to the T-Roc, the Tiago is around £2,000 less expensive, representing better value. If that translates into lower monthly payments than the T-Roc, the Tiago is likely popular.
